Grating Clip model BCGC-516 is a galvanized carbon steel grating fastener used to fasten steel bar grating to structural shapes where the structural flange is in a horizontal plane. For appropriate use, the maximum measure from the top of the grating to the bottom of the flange is 2.5 inches. It can be used on 22-spaced grating and 30-spaced grating. It will work on 19-spaced grating, but note that the grating bars will spread during tightening.
Model BCGC-516 consists of four parts, which are packed as 20 assembled units to a standard box. The principal part is the bottom portion of the assembly. This is a stamped and formed shape to contact the structure in the front and the grating in the rear. The second part is the curved top plate, which fits over the top of the grating surface.
The body and top are joined by the third and fourth parts, a 5/16” diameter bolt and nut.
As with any grating fastener, care should be taken during the grating layout, cutting and placement phase, to reduce the quantity of grating cross bars that are located over the structural member flange edge. This reduces the quantity of grating cross bars that may interfere with fastener placement, which otherwise requires cutting of cross bars.
This grating clip can be installed using hand-held tools, including a phillips head screwdriver or a nut driver for a 9/16” head bolt. Other hand-held tools, such as socket wrenches or torque wrenches can also be used.
Hold the top plate in hand, allowing the body portion to hang downward. Fit the body between two bearing bars and maneuver the body portion through the grating bearing bars until the body portion is below the bottom of the grating. Slide unit laterally toward, and allow it to fit under, the structural member flange. Make sure the backside of the body unit is
locked into place between the bearing bars. Pull upward on the top plate, holding upward force. With the formed lowerbody secure under the flange area, tighten the bolt with a 9/16″ wrench, to complete the installation of the clip. In some cases, this grating clip may have to be disassembled and reassembled to be installed correctly.
Common hand held nut drivers have a handle diameter of 1″ to 1-1/4″, which will allow installation torque (resistance to further tightening) of approximately 60 inch/pounds to be easily achieved. This is sufficient for many installation requirements. Do not exceed torque values of 100 inch/pounds if fastener reuse is desired.
HOW TO ORDER
Determine total height of grating and thickness of flange area. Relay this information to a GF, LLC distributor to ensure delivery of the correct part number for your grating installation job. GF, LLC recommends 1 clip per four square feet of grating, as a general guideline. Asking the job’s grating supplier for specific installation requirements is strongly advised.
