Description
Model GSLF-38
Grating Clip model GSLF-38 is a galvanized steel grating fastener used to fasten standard steel bar grating to structural shapes where the structural flange is in a horizontal plane. For appropriate use, the maximum measure from the top of the grating to the bottom of the beam flange should be 2” or less. It is designed to be used on 19-spaced grating with bearing bars from 1/8”
to 1/4″ wide.
Model GSLF-38consists of 3 parts, which are packed as 20 assembled units to a standard box. The principal part is the bottom portion of the assembly. This is a steel casting with the defining feature being the “stair-step” on the back end. The second part is the curved top plate, which fits flat over the grating upper surface. This part is commonly called a “saddle clip.” The body and top are joined by the third part, a 3/8”diameter threaded socket-head bolt. This bolt is fully threaded over a 2-1/4” length.
The body and top are joined by the third and fourth parts, a 5/16” diameter bolt and nut.
INSTALLATION PREPARATION
As with any grating fastener, care should be taken during the grating layout, cutting and placement phase, to reduce the quantity of grating cross bars that are located over the structural member flange edge. This reduces the quantity of grating cross bars that may interfere with fastener placement, which otherwise requires cutting of cross bars. In most cases, the GSLF-38 can be disassembled and reassembled if cross bars are in the way at the attachment point.
TOOLS REQUIRED
This grating clip can be installed using a 5/16” hex wrench or driver. In most installations, no other tools will be needed.
INSTALLATION GUIDE
Hold the top plate in hand, allowing the steel casting portion to hang downward. Fit the casting between two bearing bars and lower the unit until the top plate rests on the bearing bars with the bars underneath the rounded sides of the top plate. The stair-step side of the casting should be away from the structural beam. Slide unit laterally forward, and allow it to fit under, the structural beam flange. Pull upward on the top plate of the clip, holding upward force. With the formed lower-body secure under the flange area, tighten the bolt with a hex driver to complete the installation of the unit. As the unit is tightened, the stair step on the back side will lock under the bearing bar. We recommend that installers use at least 1 clip per 4 square feet of grating, as a general guideline. Asking the jobsite’s grating supplier for specific installation requirements is strongly advised.
TORQUE MEASUREMENTS
A hand held hex driver will generate fastening torque of 50 to 60 inch-pounds. This should be significant for most installations. In cases where severe vibrations may occur, the unit may be tightened up to 100 inch-pounds. If the clip top plate or bottom portion deforms, the unit has been over-torqued.
HOW TO ORDER
Call a Grating Fasteners distributor and describe the grating configuration to make sure this clip is the right one for the application. Units are packed in boxes of 20 clips. GSLF-38’s are only sold as complete units, not individual pieces of the assembly.
